Effects of enhance affordances in the home environment on motor development of infants at risk for developmental delays: randomized controlled trial

Abstract

There is evidence that to provide opportunities for action/mevement (affordances) in the home environment can positively influence the infants' motor development. However, there is a gap of how to expand these opportunities in infants with social and environmental risks (SER). Objective: To verify the effect of expanding action opportunities for the psychomotor development at the home environment of infants with SER. Methods: It will participate of this randomized controlled trial, 26 infants with SER, between 6-8 months of age, divided into 2 groups: 1) control group, 2) intervention group. Infants will be evaluated in 4 moments: A) Baseline (LB), Post-intervention (PI) - 1 (1 month after LB); PI-2 (1 month after PI-1), PI-3 (6 months after PI-2). Infants will be evaluated through the instruments: Affordances in the Home Environment for Infant Motor Development - Infant Scale, Alberta Infant Motor Scale e, Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III. Furthermore, the exploration behavior of 3 different objects will be filmed by one digital camera (3 minutes) and the images analyzed by the Datavyu software. In the intervention phase, parents / caregivers should perform daily activities in prone, sitting, standing and spontaneous movement with 03 objects for 4 weeks in their own homes. It could be applied parametric and non-parametric tests depending on the sample homogeneity and normal conditions, considering the significance level ± = 5%. Expected results: It is expected to provide insights into the pediatrics physical therapy professionals on how to intervene / prevent limitations and to guide parents/caregivers to favor the psychomotor development in infants with SER.
