Abstract

The esfigmomanometria is a measuring instrument used for various clinical diagnoses, including hypertension. However, measurement deviations inherent in the instrument may cause incorrect diagnostics. In Brazil, the esfigmomanometrias are evaluated by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology - INMETRO, assuring impartiality in the evaluation of the instruments. However, recent changes in regulations allow manufacturers and importers to declare conformity of the instruments marketed by them, using accredited laboratories, as an alternative to INMETRO. Since there are no proficiency testing providers for esfigmomanometrias, and there is no interest in inter laboratory comparisons between these laboratories due to economic and commercial issues, the reliability of these measurements is compromised. Thus, the present project aims to improve the blood pressure measurement in the country by means of proficiency tests to be performed by the Institute of Weights and Measures of the State of São Paulo (IPEM-SP). As a result, it is expected to obtain useful information to monitor the quality of the esfigmomanometrias from the results of a pilot program of proficiency testing with companies, in addition to initiate a periodic control of this quality.
