Reliability and validity of a food frequency questionnaire for South American children and adolescents from the SAYCARE study.

Abstract

ABSTRACTObjective: To analyze the reliability and validity of a food frequency questionnaire to assessfood consumption in South American children and adolescents.Methods: A sample of 200 children and 244 adolescents for the reliability analyses and 252children and 244 adolescents for the validity analyses, aged 3-18 years, from the SAYCARE study were included. Participants answered the food frequency questionnaire twice with a two week interval and three 24-hour dietary recalls. Spearman's correlations, weighted Cohen's kappa (kw), percentage of agreement and energy-adjusted Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated.Results: The reliability analyses for children and adolescents resulted in Spearman'scoefficients ranging from 0.47 to 0.73, energy-adjusted Pearson's coefficients ranging from0.36 to 0.76, kw coefficients ranging from 0.35 to 0.63, and percentage of agreement between 72.75% and 83.52%. The validity analyses resulted in Spearman's coefficients ranging from 0.17 to 0.37, energy-adjusted Pearson's coefficients ranging from 0.17 to 0.61, kw coefficients ranging from 0.09 to 0.24, and percentages of agreement between 45.79% and 67.06%.Conclusion: The SAYCARE food frequency questionnaire presents satisfactory reliability and an acceptable validity for almost all food group intakes in children and adolescents.
