Abstract

Dr. Pedro Acevedo Rodríguez is Curator of the US National Herbarium at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. (USA), and is currently the most experienced researcher on neotropical lianas and, in particular, on the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of the Sapindaceae family. Thus, Dr. Acevedo-Rodriguez's stay as a Visiting Researcher associated to the Sapindales Thematic Grant, in which this proposal is included aims at 1) updating the identifications of Sapindaceae collections of major Brazilian herbaria with significant collections of the Sapindaceae family; 2) Teaching a graduate course (at the host institution) and lecturing at the institutions visited; 3) collaborating in the supervision of grad students on the Sapindaceae family; 4) collaborating in the new classification for the family Sapindaceae; 5) participating in the project "The origins of guaraná: monographic, phylogenetic, and biogeographical studies of Paullinia (Sapindaceae)"; 6) collaborating in new proposals to be submitted to international funding agencies and, therefore, in the strengthening of the local research group through the international partnership.
