Abstract

The chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is an important infectious agent, globally related to amphibian population declines. With this fungus as a central theme, increasing our comprehension of the disease status in Brazil, in 2011 we were awarded a grant by a joint call from FAPESP and NSF. That grant expected to build the foundation of an international collaboration between researchers from the state of São Paulo and USA. Such partnership was consolidated and resulted in several relevant publications, greatly increasing the knowledge about Bd in Brazil. The same call (the one from 2011) implied in a subsequent larger proposal, of an ambitious grant, robust and with the research team united. It is in this context that the present proposal is placed, aiming to target diverse and multidisciplinary, but interrelated aspects as: epidemiology, ecology, and evolution of the chytrid in Brazil. In a concise way, we purpose to study Bd genetic diversity (by means of phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses), its evolution (studying the genetic and ecological relationships among different strains in a hybrid zone), its ecology in the natural environment, its epidemiology (with ex situ experiments), and the historical infection patterns in Brazil. At the highest scale, the juxtaposition of these studies will promote a solid base for amphibian conservation actions in Brazil, and possibly other similar regions of the world. The present proposal connects researchers from 11 Brazilian institutions (from north to south of Brazil) and 4 North American institutions (from west to east of the Country), totaling 32 researchers.
