Strategies for detecting and monitoring high impact weather events (HIWE)

Abstract

The impact of deep moist convection has led increased number of research activities globally. The general objective of this project is to advance the knowledge of the initial conditions and interactions of the Earth-Atmosphere system that lead to the generation of severe weather events with high social impact in southeastern South America. In order to achieve this general objective three specific objectives that focus on three key words: Detecting, Monitoring, Now casting and Understanding the processes leading to the formation of deep moist convection phenomena capable of developing severe weather. This project also serves as a preparation of the Brazilian team in the research activities of the field experiment Lightning (Remote sensing of Electrification, Lightning, and Mesoscale/microscale Processes with Adaptive Ground Observations, translates to lightning flash in Spanish and Portuguese) - CACTI (Clouds, Aerosols, and Complex Terrain Interactions).
