Multicentric study of the efficacy and safety of a national model of adjustable thoracic compressor for the conservative treatment of pectus carinatum.

Abstract

Pectus carinatum (PC) is a condition that has a prevalence of 0.67% in our environment and that besides the physical symptoms also causes profound psychological effects in patients. Although the medical literature brings evidence that PC can be treated non-invasively, in our country the treatment of this condition is still eminently surgical. The project proposal is to carry out a multicenter study involving the departments of Thoracic Surgery of the four main State universities: Heart Institute (InCor) in São Paulo and the Hospitals of the Clinics of Unicamp, USP of Ribeirão Preto and Botucatu). It will be evaluated the safety and effectiveness of the PC treatment by means of a thoracic compressor developed in our country. It will include 60 patients using the compressor for a period of up to 16 months with final reassessment at 18 months. Patients will be evaluated by thoracic CT and photographic documentation, and at the beginning of the project and at the 3, 6, 9, 12, 16 and 18 months, the anthropometric measures that are part of the evaluation will be performed. The resistance and durability of the compressor will also be tested, as well as the application of a questionnaire to evaluate the adherence of the patients to the treatment. Thus, it is expected that the project can confirm the non-invasive method as a first-line option in the treatment of CP in our environment, avoiding patients having to undergo surgery to correct the problem, besides contributing to the development of a national compressor that is compatible with our economic reality.
