Abstract

The globalization of the economy, the global financial crises of the last decades and the increased competition have led organizations to operate in an increasingly turbulent environment, which is characterized by a considerable increase in consumer demand in terms of price, quality and commitment to ethics, human well-being and environment. To increase their chances of survival in this scenario and to meet these demands, organizations have sought opportunities to obtain operational, technological and managerial improvements, which enable them to evolve from the economic, social and environmental point of view in an equitable way. The use of Integrated Management System (IMS) has been, although in an incipient way, approached in the scientific literature as a viable alternative to foster the development of socio-environmental actions in organizations. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to propose, in the light of scientific theory and based on 7 case studies, recommendations for IMS to act as foster and developer of sustainability in industrial companies. In order to achieve this objective, it will be carried out, based on a literature review, the identification of theoretical synergies and antagonisms between IMS and sustainability, which will later guide the accomplishment of the case studies and the elaboration of recommendations. This research will count on the participation of researchers from Brazil, Portugal and Spain in order to enable the sharing of knowledge and the creation of high-level scientific contributions. With the accomplishment of this research, it is expected to obtain the following results: proposition of recommendations for using IMS as foster and developer of sustainability in industrial companies; elaboration of 2 scientific articles for submission in congresses of the Production Engineering area; elaboration of 3 scientific articles for submission in international journals with Qualis CAPES A1 or A2 in Engineering III; a free workshop for the scientific and business community on the research and its results, with the presence/contribution of the associated researchers from Brazil, Portugal and Spain; preparation and provision of instructional material (book, handout, or website) on the recommendations to be proposed in order to contribute to sustainable development in the industrial context; lecture by the international researchers for professors, postgraduate and undergraduate students from FEG/UNESP; and lecture by the Brazilian researchers for professors, graduate and undergraduate students of the Institutions to be visited abroad.
