Abstract

Dr. Joan Vickers is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where her research investigates the neural, perceptual, and cognitive foundations of novice to expert motor performance. The major discovery of her research program is the "quiet eye" which has been isolated in a wide range of sport, law enforcement, surgical, and child development motor tasks. Elite performers in these areas possess a unique ability to visually focus at the most optimal moment, leading to superior performance when compared to their lesser skilled counterparts. Her visit to the University of São Paulo State (UNESP) - Campus of Bauru, SP has two main purposes: (i) she will be lecturing in two important scientific events - 1st School of Motor Behavior (13-14/08) and IX Brazilian Congress of Motor Behavior (15-18/08) - and thus sharing her deep scientific experience with Brazilian researchers and students; (ii) she will be collaborating in research projects developed by the Laboratory of Information, Vision, and Action (LIVIA) and the Laboratory of Research in Human Movement (MOVI-LAB) at UNESP/Bauru.
