Abstract

The environmental impacts due to human activities have concerned several segments of society. The ability of cities to generate is one of those impacts and its now a documented fact, and so are its effects on thermal comfort and energy performance of buildings. This research intends to verify the hypothesis that spatial urban arrangements can be controlled, oriented or stimulated in order to improve environmental quality at Brazilian cities. The final goal of this work is to generate an integrated method to analyze thermal and luminous urban environment that will contribute to the including of environmental criteria in land use legislation and in building codes. Despite of the vast international literature on the subject, parameterization of urban climate models demands more advanced studies, due to specificities of Brazilian climate and urban structure. In this research, there will be a study area to which modeling, as well as empirical measurements, will be applied. This will lead to conclusions that can be generalized and incorporated to planning practice. (AU)
