Abstract

Rio Grande reservoir, Billings Complex, is a strategical water reservoir to São Paulo Metropolitan Region, because it serves as recreation place, water supply source, and sewage receptor. Sediments are important compartments for limnic ecosystems, because they act either as source and or sink of chemicals. In anoxic environments, sulfide present in sediments may be responsible for metal ion bioavailability control; the aqueous forms are the metal specie that express toxicity in living organisms, while their maintance as an insoluble metal sulfide keeps them in a non-bioavailable form. The metal ion content may be linked to biotests data, in order to yield information about environmental degradation and local biota intoxication due to chemical contamination, as praised by the Sediment Quality Triad (SQT) approach. At the present work, Acid Volatile Sulfide (AVS) and Simultaneously Extracted Metals (SEM) Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Hg and Zn will be measured. Seasonal evaluations of AVS and SEM will be made in two different temporal scales. Biotests will be made in Heidelberg University’s laboratory in order to assess cell and genome damage. This way, we expect to compose an integrated sediment assessment from Rio Grande reservoir and contribute to sediment dynamic knowledge. (AU)
