Abstract

The development of alternative solvents is one of the research areas of Green Chemistry. Among these, the supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2-sc) is one of the most promising, because it is cheap, readily available, atoxic, odorless, not flammable, being easily recycled and removed from the final product, besides having a mild critical point (Pc=73.8 bar e Tc=31.1ºC). Its solubilizing capacity, however, is very limited and basic restricted to apolar compounds. The aggregation of surfactants in supercritical fluids is very recent in the world and totally new in Brazil. In order to improve the Green Chemistry in Brazil and to explore this promising research area, we intend to develop new surfactants environmentally compatible for supercritical fluids and to study their properties in these systems, specially aggregate formation, including its dynamic and structure, the reactivity of model compounds (phenyl benzoate esters, persistent organic pollutants like the polychlorinated biphenyls, etc).We will use techniques well known in colloid chemistry, such as solvatochromic or fluorescence probes, light or X-ray scattering and others, properly adapted to high pressure conditions.
