Abstract

Dental caries involves a diffusion process of organic acids into the mineralized tissues. These acids may be neutralized, resulting in pH alterations, which can lead to caries lesions development, modifying the mineral content of these tissues. The aim of this study will be to evaluate in vitro caries-like lesions formation in human and bovine dental substrates through polarized light microscopy and microhardness, whose relationship will be also tested. Dentine and enamel slabs will be obtained from human and bovine teeth. An induction model of artificial caries will be applied. The number of pH cycles, time of demineralization and remineralization, and volume of solution will be defined in prelimary tests. At the end of the stage of caries-like lesion induction, specimens will be sectioned in two parts. One section will be assessed for Knoop microhardness and the other one will be analyzed by polarized light microscopy. After veryfing homoscedasticity and normality, Analysis of Variance will be performed. Otherwise, non-parametric methods will be used. Analysis will be accomplished through a statistical package.
