Abstract

The Canchim breed has been used in the beef cattle industry as an alternative for production intensification. However, this breed has less fat thickness. For this reason, researches have been carried with the objective of increasing the fat deposition in this breed, including the search for molecular markers that aid the identification of the animals with greater genetic potential for this trait. To better incorporate the molecular genetics to the breeding programs, the association between molecular markers and production traits need to be evaluated in the population in study. In several bovine population, the centromeric region of chromosome 14 (BTA14) was related with fat deposition, besides in the Canchim population that will be used in this study. Among the genes located in this region, the Acyl CoA Synthetase 3 gene (ACSL3), related to the metabolism of fatty acid and the Development and Differentiation Enhancing Factor 1 gene (DDEF1), related to the adipogenesys, can be pointed as potentials candidates to influence the genetic variation for fat deposition. The scope of this work is the identification of polymorphisms in ACSL3 and DDEF1 genes, as well as the association of these polymorphisms with the fat thickness of bovine of the Canchim breed.
