Abstract

Numerical modeling of erosional sedimentary processes, transport and deposition of sediments has been used in the petroleum industry to model stratigraphic sequences in the geologic time and to test conceptual models of sedimentary basins. To simulate sedimentary processes in geological time-scale and in regional scale it's necessary to include tectonic processes that influence and are influenced by the sedimentary dynamics. For most of the models that include tectonic processes in the sedimentary dynamics, the subsidence and the uplift are imposed and the effect of loading are disregarded. In more sophisticated model, flexural effects are considered in a simplified manner using two-dimensional approximation. The aim of this project is to propose a new model to describe the evolution of sedimentary basins, to propose a numerical solution and develop software to simulate sedimentary processes considering tectonics effects for the three-dimensional case. For that purpose a previously obtained 3-D solution for the flexure of the lithosphere using finite element method will used. Climate factors and sea level changes will be included, a review of published dynamic models of sedimentary processes will be carried out in order to select or propose a new model more suitable to perform a joint modeling of sedimentary and tectonic processes.
