Abstract

This project consists on the synthesis and characterization of new vanadium(IV) and (V) complexes with N -, O- and S-donor Ligands of known bioactivity, intending to produce new potential medicaments as well as to investigate their coordination chemistry regarding the vanadium metal. Coordination compounds of vanadium in the oxidation states (IV) and (V), containing N-, O- and S-donor ligands possess biological activity as insulin enhancing compounds or insulin mimetics. The study of such complexes has increased in the last decades and represents a possibility for the development of orally active pharmaceuticals, which would be helpful for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Beyond the antidiabetic activity, vanadium complexes have shown also antitumor properties. The potentiality of the vanadium complexes for medicinal application represents a stimulant factor in the search for new compounds, added by the academic interest involved in their highly diversified coordination chemistry. Thus, this project is related to the use of biologically active ligands, intending to prepare new vanadium species with them, which could have medicinal applications as, for instance, antitumor or antidiabetic activities.
