Abstract

Tandem language learning via the internet involves the collaborative effort between native speakers of different languages with the objective of teaching each other their own language by means of computer mediated communication (LITTLE and BRAMMERTS, 1996). In order to achieve that, both tandem partners perform, at different moments, the roles of a language learner and a language teacher. Therefore, during their interactions, they are expected to identify their partner´s learning needs and to manage for their own needs to be met as well (TELLES, 2006). For this reason, such experience can be characterized as both collaborative and autonomous, what implies the development, by the learner, of a sense of responsibility by his/her own learning process. Under this perspective, self-assessment is evidenced as an important agent to foster reflections which help the students set their own learning goals and monitor the process to achieve such goals (SRIMAVIN and DARASAWANG, 2004). This study intends to observe self-assessment process as the students´ views of their own learning. The work is based on an interpretative research, of ethnographic nature, and aims at investigating (i) the learning goals and the reasons why undergraduate students (from a teacher development course) participate in a tandem language learning setting and (ii) which criteria these students are based on when they assess their own learning process.
