Abstract

Pre neoplastic lesions are important issue to study due to the human prostatic cancer high mortality and morbity. Prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) and prostatic inflammatory atrophy (PIA) are the two pre neoplastic forms known. High grade PIN presents a high diagnostic correlation with prostatic cancer in humans and PIA is characterized by epithelial atypies associated with inflammatory infiltrate, also associated with cancer. PIN is characterized by benign architecture, with cytological atypies. The absence of an infiltrative pattern and mantence of basal cell layer are diagnostic criteria. In dogs, the prostatic basal cell layer in normal tissue is not continuous, witch make PIN diagnosis difficult, once this is one of the hallmarks of this lesion. Chronic inflammation association is suggestive of PIA, as a result of a regenerative proliferation of the epithelial cells, in response to oxidant stress, and causes DNA damage. Due to the high incidence of inflammatory infiltrate in canine prostate, associated with epithelial atypies and the low PIN incidence, as observed in our preliminary study, we suggest the atypies foci study, associated or not with inflammation infiltrate, using molecular and immunohistochemical tests.
