Abstract

O Novo Mundo, edited and published in New York between 1870 and 1879 was the first magazine produced in Portuguese in the United States for distribution and circulation in Brazil. It has registered a great moment of transition at the social, political and Brazilian cultural life, marked by the beginning of the abolitionist and republican campaign , as well as the presuppose questioning and romantic ideals, imported primarily from France which dominated the literary production from 1830 to 1870. The magazine’s publishing in New York and not in Paris demonstrates the beginning of a new flow of ideas that would become dominating along the XXth century. O Novo Mundo, conceived and founded by José Carlos Rodrigues, Brazilian journalist who lived in New York, concentrates, in its pages, the idea that the United States as a model to be followed, detaching them from the American Countries, and at the same time, contributing with the identity’s differentiation of each of them. Literature developed an important role in this context, specially for its actuation focused on a national construction project, what also appears on the pages of O Novo Mundo. The objectives of this study are provide the copies of the magazine in CD-Rom with comments concerning the Brazilian literature; understanding the literary paradigmatic changes proposed by the O Novo Mundo on the context of world transformation changes and the means by which the magazine understood the insert of the Brazilian literature on the universal literary context; and, finally, verify understanding of the magazine related to the specialization of the Brazilian literary activity.
