Abstract

Studies in school-clinics suggest the greater demand is of children in school age and of low income backgrounds, due to a higher drop-out rate, both before, and during the treatment. It is questioned whether this model really fulfills the needs of these clients. In spite of proposing changes in the service offer, the need of training therapists is rarely discussed, as well as the little demand of children with internalizing problems, mentioned in literature as being of highest rate among this population. This project aims at minimizing this gap, through preparation and assessment of a proposed training for therapists to treat anxious children, outpatient of school-clinic, using an international protocol for that specific group, adapted for Brazilian population. As the traditional clinic-services in psychology receive less specific demands than clinic-services in medicine, we have chosen two medical clinic-services that usually treat this problem, in two Brazilian cities, São Paulo (USP) and Goiânia (UFG). Four therapist students and two supervisors in both centers will be selected to receive the training in protocol. Along with it, 32 anxious children, divided in two intervention groups and two control groups, will participate in the project. For the project, assessment measures will be used to characterize the profile of anxious children demands; training measures are to be used to assess the student's competence during the intervention; and clinic measures to select the participants and to evaluate the clinic results. Also, protocol assessment measures should rate the protocol adaptation for the Brazilian population. The data will be taken into consideration under supervision of the responsible group for the original protocol, from Temple University, considering the hypotheses that follow: (a) the protocol will increase clinic competences in trainee-therapists treatment of anxious children; the participants included in a treatment group should have less rates of emotional and behavior problems than those included in control group, by the end of treatment; the interventions inputs will be maintained past three months of the end of intervention; and the intervention will increase the adherence in psychiatric treatment.
