Abstract This research aims to analyze the last two novels by Eça de Queirós, from the following approaches: (a) aesthetic-literary, by which we will intend to verify the hypothesis of such novels to belong to the essay-novel category or, at least, to possess the main characteristics of it; and (b) sociohistorical, by which will be searched and evaluated whether those novels represent the reflection and criticism on the internationalized capitalism of the late nineteenth century, by the perspective from an outlying country, in that case, Portugal. The articulation between those approaches is needed according to the presupposition assumed by this research, for a social criticism of such scope should demand an original, and specific literary form, in that case, the form of the essay-novel - a presupposition that will also be tested and, if possible, proven in this research.
