Abstract

The surgically assisted palatine expansion is a routine procedure in treating maxillary transverse deficiency. This procedure is performed through a bilateral osteotomy of the lateral wall of the maxilla and a sagittal osteotomy at the midline. The split of the pterygoid processes is controversial in the literature. Further, the relation between the design of the orthodontics appliances and the force distribution along the sutures of the cranium is unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate how the forces are distributed along the cranial bones through a biomechanical evaluation of the surgically assisted palatine expansion and the influence of the design of the orthodontic appliances on these forces. The photoelastic models will be constructed using a prototyping of a human skull as a model. The Haas and Hyrax will be the appliances used. The anchoring teeth will be the first molar and first premolar in one configuration and the second molar and cuspid at another configuration. The force activation characteristics of the appliances will be determined using the Instron test machine. The photoelastic models will be evaluated at the polariscope during two techniques of surgically assisted palatine expansion. In the first the pterygoid processes will be separated and during the second technique they will be preserved.
