Abstract

For over a century researchers have been interested in evaluating the effects of rapid maxillary expansion. This procedure was introduced by Angell (1860) and modifies the morphology of the maxilla. It disarticulates the midpalatal and other facial sutures and promotes increase of the transversal and anteroposterior maxillary dimensions. Several studies have shown that the maxillary expansion creates significant changes in the maxilla and mandible, upper incisors, molars and respiration. Surgically Assisted Maxillary Expansion (SARME) is the method of choice for the treatment of transversal maxillary deficiency in adult patients. The skeletal changes which result from maxillary expansion can be verified by radiographies, but this lacks precision due to superimposition of cranial base structures. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) allows acquisition of volumetric data, increasing precision. It is presently widely used for dentofacial deformity treatment planning. The objective of this study will be to evaluate volumetric alterations of the nasal cavity of 28 patients, diagnosed with transverse deficiency maxillary undergoing rapid expansion surgically assisted maxillary through volumetric scans belonging to the Dental Surgery of the file from the Dental School Araraquara - UNESP FOAr.
