Abstract

The main objective of this research is to propose an observational methodology to comprehend the offense-defense relation dynamics in a basketball game based on the identification of game actions and strategic patterns of the team and its relation to points made. In a first part, offense and defense game actions from different game levels will be classified and validated. These categories, among other variables, will constitute parameters of an offense-defense model, based on the Game Theory. According to this theory, the strategic adjustments a team does are conditioned for its level of success against the opponent, denominated "pay-off". Therefore, the model parameters will put together all strategic possibilities of a team to get the biggest pay-off possible. After its validation, the model will be applied as a methodological instrument to systematize the strategic possibilities of an offense-defense relationship in a game. For this reason, the parameters combinations will be synthesized, with cluster statistical technique, in the fewer number of strategic patterns possible, based on its similarities. The repetition of strategic patterns will be analyzed and its variation rate will interpreted together with success level of the pay-off obtained. A computational software for data management will be created for the application of this methodology. Our intention is that with this methodology be possible to comprehend the tendencies and diversity of the game actions and modifications implemented in a team strategy. (AU)
