Abstract Given the lack of studies about Corumbella werneri and the relevance of these organisms to understand the biological and geological events that occurred in the Proterozoic/Cambrian transition, it is proposed here a systematic, paleoecologic and paleobiogeographic analysis of Corumbella werneri occurrences in the Tamengo Formation (Corumbá Group), Terminal Neoproterozoic, Mato Grosso do Sul. In this context, this project aims: a) to review the Corumbella werneri specimens, from Tamengo Formation, Corumbá Group, based on samples proceeding from Itaú and Lajinha quarries, near Corumbá city, MS, b) to review morphological attributes and terms used in literature, for the systematic study of Corumbella werneri, c) to perform a basic taphonomic analysis to determine the morphological attributes that can mislead taxonomic interpretations, d) to verify the existence of variation in taxonomic composition of Corumbella werneri, from Tamengo Formation, e) to establish paleoecological characteristics of Corumbella werneri, such as habitat and way of life, f) to confirm morphological and paleoecological evidences used in discussions about phylogenetic relationships of Corumbella werneri among Metazoa (Cnidaria) and "Vendobionta", and, g) to compare Corumbella occurrences from Tamengo Formation to other correlated fossils, for example, the ones from the Lower Wood Canyon Formation, Great Basin, USA Arroyo del Soldado Group, Uruguay, in order to discuss paleobiogeographic and geocronologic implications, among these basins. Considering what is exposed above, researches about Corumbella werneri are essential to establish the events that occurred in Neoproterozoic and should encourage more detailed understanding of patterns and biological and geological processes that were subsequent to this eon, in Phanerozoic. | |
