Abstract

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune multisystemic disease characterized by periods of activity and remission. The clinical manifestations more frequently observed are skin lesions, photosensitivity, oral ulcers, arthritis, serositis, renal and neurological involvement. The central nervous system is frequently involved, and manifestations as seizures, mood disorders, headaches, and neuropathies can be observed in variable frequencies.Laboratory involvement includes hematological abnormalities such as leucopenia and hemolytic anemia and immunological features. Laboratory features support the diagnosis and helps determining disease activity. This cross-sectional study aims to compare the levels of interferon alpha and gamma and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in 100 patients with SLE to 20 first-degree relatives and to 20 healthy volunteers. We also aim to correlate these findings to the clinical manifestations of SLE, disease activity and end-organ damage. Levels of interferon, both alpha and gamma and TNF will be measured from peripheral blood samples (serum) by the method of Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA).
