Abstract

It's known that in the language teaching and learning process, a motivated student will take more responsibility for his own learning, acting in an autonomous way and making good use of the technological resources in order to develop it. The Project Teletandem Brazil: Foreign languages for all is considered a new context to study motivation and student's autonomy when they interact by means of instant message tools (Windows Live Messenger, Skype, Oovoo). In this specific context, each partner will learn the language of the other and will teach his own language, consequently, he will take the roles of a student and teacher at a time. The autonomy in Teletandem is constructed in a collaborative way by the partners, where each one takes responsibility for his own learning and during interaction they construct knowledge from their individual needs and constant negotiation. Therefore, the choice for a given subject or a specific teaching strategy can affect the partners' motivation. The mains goals of the current work are: i) verify the initial motivation of partners in relation to the foreign language learning in teletandem and ii) analyze if they are kept or not during the interacting process, observing the relationship with the autonomy and reciprocity principles. It's a qualitative work, and of ethnographic nature. The data are provided from semi-open questionnaires, online interaction records (audio and video recordings), research diaries and semi-structured interviews.
