Abstract

In spite of being one of most exploited fish species in Southeast Region of Brazil, the pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) still presents some obstacles concerning its hormonally-induced reproduction, mainly regarding to breeders that do not spawn after hormonal treatment. In this context, the intense asynchrony on the process of ovary maturation among individuals must be considered, since because of that, immature females may be mistakenly chosen, and/or the excessive management searching for mature fish may induce a regression process throughout the broodstock. In this context, according to some studies conducted in other fish species, a factor that must be considered is the effect of age and particular characteristics of each breeder, and also the fact that the same breeders are sucessively induced during consecutive years. Therefore we will, in this study try to evaluate the individual reproductive performance (by appointment with microchips) of bredeers considered "new" (4 years old) and "old" (ten years) during two consecutive years. The effect of age of the breeders will be measured by comparing between the two groups, the onset of the process of gonadal maturation and the average fecundity, fertility, hatching, larval and fry rates. The effect of successive hormonal induction will be measured by analyzing comparatively the same variables previously mentioned in the reproductive performance of couples during two consecutive spawns. Concluding, the obtained results may ensure efficiency in the production of pacu fingerlings. In this way we intend to generate parameters needed to establish a secure protocol for selection of suitable breedeers depending on particular characteristics of breeders, such as age and size. (AU)
