Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that infects many species of mammals and birds. He has extensive worldwide distribution and more than half of the adult human population has antibodies against the parasite. Due to its feeding habits, the birds are good indicators of environmental contamination. This project is approved by IBAMA SISBIO N. 16428-1 and the Ethics Committee of Animal Experimentation (UEL) N.7/2008. Thus the study aims to isolate and molecularly characterize strains of T. gondii in pigeons (Zenaida auriculata) naturally infected in the city of Londrina, Paraná. 384 birds will be captured in squares of the city of Londrina. These animals will be euthanized for blood collection to obtain serum and tissues (brain, heart, lung and pectoral muscle). Sera will be used to assess the presence of antibodies against T. gondii by modified agglutination test (MAT) and tissues for the isolation of the parasite by bioassay in mice. After the biological characterization and isolation of strains in the bioassay will be carried out PCR-RFLP for molecular characterization.
