Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the presence and circulation of fictional textes in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro, based on two journals published by Laemmert´s brothers: "Correio das Modas" (1838-1839) and "Novo Correio de Modas"(1852-1854).They published fictional narratives, as well as fashion plates, rules of elegance and designs of costumes. At this time, when the publication of "feuilleton" in brazilian press was spreading, those publications were pioneers and contributed to the consolidation of a national literature. The aims of this research are: reconstitute the conditions of existence of those journals, considering its production and circulation; identify the narratives at those magazines (identifying which of them are Brazilian which are translated); observe the presence of the triad edification, education and delight in the narratives; analyze their contribution to the formation of national literature. It is also interesting to observe the relation between the editors and the foreign literature translated and published in their periodicals.
