Abstract

The aim of this project is to analyze the circulation and translation of German-speaking fictional works in Brazil in the nineteenth century, in order to contribute to studies on Book History. This research will be based on the analysis of advertisements found in newspapers published in Brazil, such as the Deutsche Zeitung: für Brasilien (1874), the Deutsches Wochenblatt (1883-1885), the Allgemeine Deutsche Zeitung (1886-1889) and the Diário do Rio de Janeiro (1821-1878); on 15 catalogs published by booksellers Henrique Laemmert, Eduardo Laemmert and Baptiste-Louis Garnier between the 1840s and 1870s and on the catalogues of Gabinete Português de Leitura do Rio de Janeiro (1858) and Biblioteca Fluminense (1866). The analysis will be centered on three main points: which were the most prominent German-speaking authors in the catalogs of booksellers and public libraries of the nineteenth century; how many translations of these books were available in Brazil and what was the relevance of these books and of certain subgenres, such as the historical novel, in these catalogs. This research aims to find evidence of the relevance of German-speaking fictional works within the transatlantic circulation of printed matter in the nineteenth century. (AU)
