Abstract

This project is part of two major ones: the FAPESP Thematic Project (2011/07342- 9) entitled "The Transatlantic Circulation of the Print: the Globalization of Culture in the Nineteenth Century", coordinated by Marcia Azevedo de Abreu (UNICAMP), and its international development into a homonymous project of research cooperation. Professor Lucia Granja (UNESP/São José do Rio Preto), responsible for the present post-doctorate scholarship application, takes part in both projects as a researcher. The projects aim at investigating, based on aspects of the relationship between Machado de Assis and the Garnier brothers as well as on document sources about the Garniers and their Rio and Paris bookshops, the professional activities connecting the booksellers/publishers and the 19th century author, with a view to broadening the discussion of the following questions: the relation between literary composition and material support vis-à-vis Machado de Assis's conception of literary writing; the circulation of books in the Paris-Rio de Janeiro connection through the hands of the bookselling brothers; and, as a corollary, the discussion of some aspects concerning the globalization of culture in the 19th century.
