The Cultural Revolution of the 19th century: theatre, the book-trade, and reading in the transatlantic world

Abstract

The proposed book focuses on the process of the globalization of culture in the nineteenth century and analyzes this through the prism of the transatlantic diffusion of French, Brazilian, Portuguese and English cultures. In particular, it observes the circulation of printed matter, publishers, booksellers and actors between Europe and America. The essays in this collection have been developed as a result of a course offered in August 2012 at the University of Campinas and University of São Paulo by the São Paulo School of Advanced Studies on the Globalization of Culture in the Nineteenth Century, organised as part of the FAPESP-funded international project 'The transatlantic circulation of printed matter - the globalization of culture in the 19th century'. Information about the project is available at:http://www.circulacaodosimpressos.iel.unicamp.br/index.php?cd=&lang=en.Informtation about São Paulo School is available at:http://www.espea.iel.unicamp.br/index.php?lang=en (AU)
