Abstract

Nanotechnology promises to exceed the impact of the Industrial Revolution and it is projected to become a market of one trillion dollars in 2015. Nanomaterials (NM) are already being used in sports equipment, tires, stain-resistant clothing, sunscreens, cosmetics and electronics. The rapid development in nanotechnology has led, as well as other technological advances, the prediction of major benefits and also great dangers to humanity and the ecosystem. Therefore, the aim of this study is to establish the responses of three human cell lines regarding cell viability (XTT) and clonogenic survival, cell death, and genotoxicity (Comet Assay and micronucleus test) when treated with titanium dioxide and cerium dioxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes. So, given the considerable uncertainty about the safety of using NM, it is important to understand and subsequently minimize any potential toxicity associated with them, not only to protect human health and the ecosystem, but also to provide the safe growth of nanotechnology.
