Development of nanocomposites as supports for nanostructured metal catalysts

Abstract

This proposal consists in the development of new magnetic catalysts supports for immobilization of monometalic and bimetalic nanoparticles. The supports are based on magnetite coated by a shell of oxides of catalytic interest, such as silica, ceria, titania, alumina and zirconia and with carbon. These oxides will be functionalized with groups that show affinity for the metals, in order to control the size and dispersion of metal nanoparticles after reduction on the support surface and to avoid metal leaching. The catalysts will be mainly based on gold nanoparticles and bimetalic nanoparticles of gold associated to another metal for application in oxidation of olefins and alcohols with molecular oxygen or air and for hydrogenation. Nanoparticles of noble metals, like Pd, Ru, Pt and Rh, already studied by the research group using supports with silica coating, will be now applied with different supports for hydrogenation reactions. Other metals, such as Mo, V, Fe, Cu e else, could also be applied for oxidation of olefins with molecular oxygen.
