Abstract

Introduction: cognition is a complex function influenced by a number of genes, each with a small role. The performance in each cognitive domain can be statistically associated to the activity of certain proteins and by that through genetic variations responsible for theses functional differences. The patients with bipolar disorder present serious dysfunctions during phases of mania, depression and mixed states. Nowadays we work with the hypothesis that exist a group of patients with similar genetic features that present a worse cognitive decline during the course of the illness. The genes most associated to cognitive function are catecol-o-metiltransferase, apolipoprotein E and brain derived neurotrophic protein. Our objective is to look for an association between cognitive performance and genotype of COMT, APOE and BDNF during the symptomatic phase of the disease. Methods: 80 symptomatic patients bipolar Type I, free of medication, age 18-35 years old and 60 healthy controls will go through complete cognite evaluation and genotyping for COMT, APOE and BDNF.
