Abstract

This research aims to study the textual production(journal articles and books) of José Marianno Carneiro da Cunha Filho, trying to gather evidence to ascertain the degree of importance of his activity as a critic of architecture, urbanism and art, between 1920 and 1944. The specific focus of this research is to investigate the José Marianno s assessment in relation to art, architecture and city in the 19th century. The aim of this research is to analyze the speech of José Marianno on Brazilian architecture into a period considered by him as the "spoilizing" Brazilian essence of architecture, the arts and urban. The research also intents to analyze what was the historiographical scheme and technical and political vocabulary used by Marianno Filho with respect to the nineteenth century and whether it was eventually used by other historians and / or critics of the nineteenth century in Brazil.
