Abstract

In fish, an interesting way to reduce the production costs and nitrogen excretion into the environment is through the adequate inclusion of energy sources cheaper than protein, such as carbohydrates, enabling the dietary protein been utilized as efficiently as possible to growth, and not as an energy source. Although some studies have been conducted with the use of carbohydrates by pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus the possible sparing effect of dietary protein by the addition of carbohydrates has not been studied. In this way, this proposal aims to determine the protein sparing effect through diet with suboptimal levels of protein and increased levels of carbohydrates, using growth performance and body composition as tool for evaluating the diets. Pacu juveniles will be distributed in 28 boxes of polyethylene (100-L) at a ratio of 12 fish / tank. For 90 days, fish will be fed two meals a day (09h00 and 17h00). The experiment will be conducted in a completely randomized design with seven treatments (21:40, 21:50, 21:60, 19:40, 19:50, 19:60, and 23:46% PD:CHO%) and four replications. Growth performance and body composition of fish will be evaluated. The results will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the averages compared by Tukey test (5%) using the SAS statistical software, version 9.0. (AU)
