Abstract

The reorganization of the countryside through the implementation of rural settlements contributes to the construction of a new rural Brazil. To understand the lifestyle and relationships that fill these spaces is necessary to know the issues that lie behind the whole structure, these are: economic, political, environmental, cultural or social. Each space has unique characteristics that contribute to understanding its physical and symbolic. In this context, the use of non-agricultural activities for income generation of rural settlements in areas such as the implementation of tourism, fish farming, handicrafts, among others, contributes directly and indirectly, to the formatting of the existing relations in the settlement, according to the sociocultural characteristics of each context examined. By choosing as a locus of research included settlements in southern Mato Grosso do Sul, we plan to support future comparisons with the rural settlements in the southeast, especially those located in the western state of São Paulo, in the Pontal, central area of research Laboratory for the Study of Rural Settlements, which the author is bound.
