Abstract

The proposed project intends to perform an theoretical analysis of the characteristics of diffusion flames, originated from the burning of liquid fuels, established inside inert porous media (in-situ combustion). The phenomenon of porous medium combustion is present in a wide variety of applications, from radiant industrial burners to the burning of solid propellants of bursters and the decomposition of liquid propellants of rockets of attitude control, passing through the thermal oil recovery method. For this reason, porous medium combustion have a great technologic and scientific interest. The development of this project will focus on the conditions of the in-situ combustion. However, its fundamental characteristics will allow, if one wishes and performing some modifications, the analysis of any of the previous mentioned cases. Due to the fact that the transport processes exists in different spatial scales, the process of combustion may be described analytically by using the singular perturbation method. The development of the present project will lead to a new mathematical modeling of the structure of the diffusion flames originated from the burning of liquid fuels in porous media. This model may be used to provide information from the small scales (of the order of 1/10 meter) to the scale in which the in-situ combustion simulation take place. In the case of the oil well, this spatial scale is of the order of kilometers. The model also may serve as a benchmark for numerical codes. This project is a continuity of the work developed in the Masters Dissertation of the candidate. (AU)
