Abstract

Metabolic Syndrome and aerobic capacity markers of rats (Rattus norvegicus albinos, Wistar) at different ages: effects of exercise.Physical activity can play a key role in prophylaxis and treatment of the metabolic syndrome. However, longitudinal studies in humans have limitations as to the invasive nature of certain tests, the size and randomness of the sample. Animal models that proper mimic the human physiological responses can aid research on this condition. In this context, the present study was designed to assess markers of metabolic syndrome and of the aerobic capacity in rats (Rattus norvegicus), Wistar, albinus variation at different ages. Additionally, we intend to evaluate the effects of physical swimming training (one hour / day, five days / week) in intensity equivalent to 80% maximal lactate steady state, starting in early adulthood (four months of age) on these markers . The animals will be evaluated at two (young age), four (young adulthood), six (adulthood) and twelve months (maturity) of age with respect to: glucose tolerance (glucose tolerance test), insulin sensitivity (Insulin tolerance test); aerobic capacity (maximal lactate steady state test); carcass fat (Lee index); serum fasting glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and insulin levels; weight and concentration of triglycerides in adipose tissue from different regions; concentrations of triglycerides and markers of lipid peroxiodation (TBARS) in liver, heart and skeletal muscle (soleus) and insulin-stimulated glucose uptake by isolated skeletal muscle (soleus).
