Abstract

Dyes have many applications and they are present in cosmetics, food, textile and leather industries, it has been observed the majority of the consumed dyes are in textile industries. However, due to the ineffective traditional process of wastewater treatment regarding the dyes degradation, these substances may reach the water bodies and put in risk the aquatic life and the human health. The studies that refer to toxicity of dyes are very scarce. In this way, there are a need to clarify the possible effects of these kinds of substances and their byproducts of treatment to aquatic organisms, in view of giving a background to risk assessment of these possible environmental pollutants. Therefore, the present research project aims to characterize the ecotoxicity of two textile dyes, C.I. Vat Green 3 and C.I. Reactive Black 5. Like this, it will be performed ecotoxicity tests using the dyes and their byproducts obtained of advanced oxidative treatments (Photo-Fenton and Photoeletrocatalysis), using freshwater test organisms representing the zooplankton community (Daphnia similis and Ceriodaphnia dubia) and one organism representing the freshwater phytoplankton community, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
