Translation cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric tests of PEDro scale into Portuguese

Abstract

PEDro (Physiotherapy Evidence Database - www.pedro.org.au) is a database that indexes studies aimed to investigate the efficacy of physiotherapy interventions. All randomized controlled trials indexed on PEDro have their methodological quality and statistical reporting evaluated by a quality scale called the PEDro scale. Brazil is currently ranked in third place in terms of number of searches on the PEDro website and the directors of the PEDro project acknowledge that the number of searches would be even greater if the PEDro website as well as the PEDro scale were available in different languages. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: 1) to translate and cross-culturally adapt the PEDro scale into Portuguese, and 2) to test the psychometric properties of the adapted scale. The process of translation, adaptation and psychometric testing will be performed following the recommendations of the Guidelines for the process of cross-cultural adaptation of self-report measures and Quality criteria for measurement properties of health status questionnaires respectively. Six physiotherapists will receive extensive training sessions with regards to the PEDro scale. These physiotherapists will then rate the quality of 50 randomized controlled trials using the newly adapted scale. Psychometric tests of internal consistency, reliability and agreement will be performed as well as comparisons of the scores from the Brazilian scale will be compared with the scores of the same articles that were rated by the original PEDro scale in English. We expect that the Portuguese version of the PEDro scale will have similar psychometric properties to the original PEDro scale in English. (AU)
