Abstract

The diversity of bees in the Neotropical region accounts for one third of the taxa known to the world insects. However, this species richness may be underestimated by the lack of systematic studies for several bee lineages. Among these groups, the tribe Protandrenini has its distribution restricted to the New World, and it is especially diverse in xeric and temperate Neotropical areas. A major issue regarding its classification is the establishment of its genera as monophyletic units. The imprecise delimitation of these groups is a great impediment for species recognition and description of new taxa. Recent phylogenetic analyses conducted with combined morphological and molecular datasets have provided a more comprehensive classification of the genera included within the tribe. Therefore, this project aims to study the systematics of Neotropical Protandrenini genera, providing description for two new genera and a taxonomic revision of two previously known genera, Cephalurgus and Parasarus. These groups are in need of a modern taxonomic approach, with redescription of type material, designation of lectotypes and development of identification keys. The results will provide a high increment on the current knowledge of Protrandenini and will build a strong foundation to support further biogeographic studies, similar to those recently conducted to elucidate the evolutionary patterns of diagonal dry areas in South America.
