Abstract

The aim of the project is the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured films of nanocomposites obtained by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and self-assembly layer-by-layer (LbL) techniques, envisaging sensor application for environmental monitoring. Ultrathin films of conducting polymers functionalized with nanoclays and gold nanoparticles will be studied to optimize the molecular architectures that will compose the sensing units of the sensor. Additionally, the thickness control offered by the LB and LbL techniques can be explored to achieve low response times in the device. The nanocomposites will be made preferentially by polyaniline (PAni), montmorilonite clay and gold nanoparticles. The characterization of the Langmuir monolayers by surface pressure and surface potential will be essential to better define the LB film fabrication, which will further deposited onto solid substrates, and for the LbL films will be chosen the molecular architecture that allows heavy metals and phenolic compounds detection. LB and LbL films of conducting polymers, nanoclays and gold nanoparticles, as well their interaction with analytes, will be studied and characterized throughout UV-vis, FTIR and spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The best ultrathin films obtained will be immersed in different liquid systems, and used as work electrode in cyclic voltammetry and Square Wave Anodic Stripping voltammetry. (AU)
