Development of electrodes based on composites made of carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers and gold nanoparticles

Abstract

Materials based on Conducting Polymers (CPs) and Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have been increasingly used in nanotechnology applications. Aiming applications such as sensors and electrocatalysts materials, the CNTs have the ability to promote the electron transfer reactions, increase the reaction rate and reduce oxidation potential. In turn, the main characteristic of CPs is their electrical conductivity that can be regulated in a wide range, through interactions with recipients and donors of electrons, which makes them attractive as transducers or active materials. Additionally, composites of CNTs with CPs exhibit synergetic properties such as the decrease of the electrical resistance and the increase of the specific capacitance. Modified with nanoparticles, these materials have also been used in applications such as the electrocatalytic oxidation of small organic molecules and electrochemical sensors. The main objective of this project is to develop at the Federal University of São Paulo, Campus Diadema, electrode materials based on carbon nanotubes and polyaniline composites modified with gold nanoparticles. The composites will be produced with different mass compositions by chemical synthesis and electrochemistry. Films of these materials will be deposited at solid electrodes such as ITO, platinum and glassy carbon using methods of prepare such as evaporation (casting), electrochemical synthesis and layer-by-layer (LBL). The composites will be characterized using various techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Ultraviolet-Visible and Infrared spectrophotometry (UV-visible and IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
