Abstract

It is important for health professionals to have the knowledge about the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for a particular disease in the community in order to allocate sufficient resources to handle the problems associated with such disease. Objectives: To establish the main risk factors for speech and language disorders in children. Method: This research will be developed with all the children served by the Speech Therapy Clinic of the Department of Physiotherapy, Communication Science and Disorders, and Occupational Therapy of University of São Paulo, between May 2011 and April 2012 (approximately 200 subjects). A questionnaire will be applied with the parents or guardians of research participants. The questions are about general issues of pregnancy, childbirth and child health to identify risk factors for language disorders. Data will be recorded in individual protocols and tabulated for further analysis. The statistical treatment to be implemented will be descriptive and analytical. Data analysis will be based on the relationship between the answers given in the questionnaires and speech and language disorders present to establish the sensitivity of this questionnaire.
