Abstract

This post-doctoral project complements my current research line, sponsored by CNPq, entitled "O cinema e as comemorações do centenário da Independência do Brasil: história, memória e monumento". The main objective of this research is to discuss the presence of the cinema in the celebrations of the centenary of Brazil's Independence, in particular in the International Exhibition of the Centenary, which took place between 1922 and 1923 in Rio de Janeiro. As far as this post-doctoral study is concerned, the perspective is to historically understand this participation on the World Fairs between 1893 (World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago) and 1937 (Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la vie moderne, Paris). This post-doctoral research will be conducted in the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art do Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches sur l'Histoire et l'Esthétique du Cinéma (Cerhec) at the University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, under the supervision of Prof Sylvie Lindenperg (recommendation letter attached). Considering that this research will take place in French archives and given that there are already studies about this subject covering the World Fair of 1900 in Paris, this research will further examine this theme on other important exhibitions which took place in the French capital in the beginning of XX century: Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (1925); Exposition Coloniale Internationale (1931); Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la vie moderne (1937). Additionally, taking into account the participation of France in the Exhibition of 1922, we will investigate any relevant documentation related to the theme, specially the performance of French cinematographic companies, which carried out newsreels about the event.
