Abstract

A large proportion of bacterial infections in hospitalized patients, especially in intensive care unit, is caused by Acinetobacter baumannii. This non-fermenter coccobacillary rods is extremely persistent in hostile environment and often resistant to most existing antibiotics. Nowadays, reports of A. baumannii resistant to carbapenems has greatly increased. The aim of this project is to investigate the clonal types of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) isolated during the period between April 2008 to November 2010 in the University Hospital of Federal University of Juiz de Fora. After digestion of the bacterial genomic DNA, by SmaI restriction enzyme, the fragments produced will be submitted to pulsed field gel electrophoresis, and its profile will be analyzed to define the clones. The clonal types found will be compared with their susceptibility profile. A sample of each clone will be selected to be typed by MLST (Multilocus Sequence Typing), allowing the comparison of the studied isolates with those one from all around the world, through specific database. The results of this work will help to determine the way of CRAB dissemination, defining if the resistant phenotype is found in interrelated bacterial strains or not, besides determining the genetic relatedness of the studied strains with other on the worldwilde scenery.
