Abstract

The unit of study called the watershed is considered an important agent of integration between natural and anthropogenic processes. So, studying the metabolism of the rivers to get to know the factors that involve functional alterations in these processes, is therefore, not only important, but necessary. In watersheds, these changes reflect more rapidly compared to meso-scale basins, making them important in the identification of changes in land use. An example is the Piracicaba river basin, which represents an authentic model of basin developed with environmental problems typical of impacted areas. Studies undertaken by the Project PiraCena between the years 1994 and 2001, confirmed that emissions from domestic and industrial sewage and changes in land use have contributed to drastic changes in the metabolism of the basin. However, since the closure of this project, many new investments and resources in sanitation and sewage treatment and restoration areas has been applied in the basin, managed by Comitês das Bacias Hidrográficas dos Rios Piracicaba, Capivari e Jundiaí. In this context, this project aims to identify, through the study of the temporal distribution patterns of indicators of water quality, possible improvements in water quality in watersheds of the Piracicaba River. All the data obtained at the end of this study will be compared with results published by the Project PiraCena. The results will be also correlated with attributes of land use, measured by geoprocessing techniques, seeking to identify the interference of urbanization on the results of the analysis proposed.
